Cisco Jabber FAQ What is Jabber? Cisco Jabber is a full featured “softphone” that can replace your CISCO desktop phone. It works on PCs, Macs, and mobile devices, supporting both Audio and Video calls. Cisco Jabber brings together voice, video, desktop sharing and conferencing. Where can I obtain Jabber for my PC or Mac? PCs have Jabber auto-installed and Macs have the application available in the Self-Service application. Does Jabber require a VPN? No, you do not need a VPN to use Jabber from outside the PBS network. How do I make a phone call? Click on the search filed text box (top of the Jabber application), and type the name of the user or dial the extension or dial a number as you do when using your desk phone. Can I make a video call with Jabber? Yes. You have two settings for enabling video calls. You can set video to start automatically or to never start automatically which requires that both participants manually start their video once a call is established if they want video. Click the gear symbol at the top of the main Jabber screen and select “Options...”, “Preferences”, “Calls” to change the default behavior. You will also need to allow Jabber to access your camera if using a mobile device. Can I share my screen when using Jabber for a video call? Yes, you can quickly share your screen using Jabber. To share your screen, just click the Share Screen icon (underscore with up arrow on top of it) when in a call. Sometimes the wrong speaker or microphone is being used by Jabber and people cannot hear me or I cannot hear them. How can I change or set a default speaker and microphone combination to keep this from happening? On the main Jabber window there is a gear symbol at the top right. Click on that icon and select “Options”, “Audio”. It is here that you set your default microphone, speaker, and ringer. Move your cursor to the right edge of the window and a scroll bar will appear. If you scroll down there is an “Advanced” button, which if clicked you can set the priority for audio devices. If you have a few different audio devices and switch between them, you will find these preferences very handy. Whenever you have audio problems on a call, check here first to see which devices are active.
