How to Install and Set Up Slack
How you install Slack will depend on what computer you are using and who owns it.
NOTE: Slack is NOT SSO enabled, so your Slack password AND authentication method should be different from your PBS password.
INSTALLATION
On a PBS owned Windows computer, go to the Microsoft Store app.
On a PBS owned Mac computer, open the Self-Service app.
On a phone (PBS or personal), install Slack from the App Store for iPhones or Google Play Store for Androids.
You can also access Slack without installing anything by using a web browser on any device (PBS or personal).
FIRST TIME SIGN IN
If you're setting up Slack for the first time, visit https://pbs.slack.com/signup and follow the prompts to set up your account.
SIGNING IN TO AN EXISTING ACCOUNT
On a web browser
- Go to http://pbs.slack.com/signin.
- Enter your PBS email and either sign in through a magic code provided to your PBS email OR by clicking "sign in manually instead" to enter your Slack password.
- Click Open to access the PBS workspace.
- Enter your Slack authentication code. Depending on what you set up previously, you will either receive it by opening the Authentication app on your phone and manually entering the code that displays for Slack OR through a SMS text message.
On an app
- Open the Slack app.
- Choose the option to Sign In with Workspace URL.
- Enter "PBS" where it says "your-workspace-url".
- Enter your PBS email and your Slack password.
- Enter your Slack authentication code. Depending on what you set up previously, you will either receive it by opening the Authentication app on your phone and manually entering the code that displays for Slack OR through a SMS text message.
SLACK 2-FACTOR AUTHENTICATION ISSUES
Slack does not provide an authentication prompt like the Microsoft SSO sign in. If you used the Authenticator app, you will need to open the app and type in the code that appears before the countdown completes and changes it.
Make sure that you are reading the prompt very carefully. If it says PBS email, go to your email for the prompt. If it says authentication method, check your Authenticator app or text messages (depending on which option you set up previously).
If you run into issues with your Slack authentication that are not resolved by the notes above, please call the Solution Center 703-739-5222 to do a brief verification check and then we can reset your Slack 2FA.
